Frequently Asked Questions
ICF Accreditations
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) is the leading global organization for coaching professionals, setting the highest standards for coaching excellence. The ICF provides accreditation for coaches, offers credentials that recognize expertise, and upholds a code of ethics to ensure quality and integrity in the coaching profession.
With over 50,000 members worldwide, the ICF is recognized as the benchmark for coaching credentials, offering three primary certification levels: ACC (Associate Certified Coach), PCC (Professional Certified Coach), and MCC (Master Certified Coach).
While an ICF credential is not legally required to become a coach, it is universally recognized as the gold standard in the industry, backed by the world’s largest coaching organization—10 times bigger than any other.
For coaches, obtaining an ICF certification elevates their credibility, expands career opportunities, and ensures they have received rigorous training and demonstrated coaching proficiency. For clients, an ICF credential provides assurance that their coach meets internationally recognized standards for professionalism, ethics, and effectiveness.
How will an ICF credential help my coaching practice?
Two simple reasons: First, HR compliance has significantly increased at larger organizations, making ICF accreditation (ACC or PCC) a standard qualifier and initial selection criterion. Second, career growth—ICF accreditation, combined with the right training, enhances credibility, offers global recognition, expands opportunities, increases earning potential, and improves coaching skills—all essential in today’s competitive coaching landscape.
To earn your ICF credential efficiently, you have two main options: the ICF Pathway route or an ICF-accredited Level 1 or Level 2 program.
The ICF Pathway route requires combining courses of at least 30 CCE units each, to meet all the ICF standards. This can be time-consuming, costly, and confusing. You're responsible for ensuring all components meet ICF’s Core Competencies and CCE requirements. Application fees are significantly higher, reviews can take up to 18 weeks, and the risk of rejection is greater—often requiring additional training, time, and resubmission of your recordings. This can be a time-consuming, expensive, lonely and stressful experience.
By contrast, an ICF-accredited Level 1 or Level 2 program offers a comprehensive, streamlined solution. These programs bundle all necessary training, mentor coaching, and performance evaluations to meet all ICF requirements. They’re more time- and cost-efficient, with faster application reviews (2–4 weeks) and lower fees. The GCG certification program, for instance, has a 100% first-time pass rate.
If you want a faster and smarter path to becoming an ICF-certified coach, a Level 1 or 2 program is your best option.
Follow these recommended steps to achieve your ICF ACC or PCC accreditation within 2–4 weeks:
- Join ICF – Sign up for ICF membership (typically approved within 24 hours).
- Apply – Submit your application for ACC or PCC using the Level 1 or 2 ICF Coaching Education Certificate issued by GCG. This fast-tracks your application—typically approved within 2–4 weeks (compared to 16+ weeks for ICF pathway applications).
- Pass the Exam – Complete the ICF competency exam. With all the training, resources, and exam preparation provided in our program, this will feel like a breeze.
- Get Certified – Upon passing, ICF typically confirms your ACC or PCC accreditation within 24 hours (on weekdays).
No. Continuing Coach Education (CCE) units and Level 1 or Level 2 certificates earned through ICF accredited organizations like GCG do not expire. Once earned, they remain valid indefinitely.
Your ACC or PCC credential is valid for three years. To renew, you must complete 40 hours of ICF approved training during that time. GCG offers various programs and resources to help you meet these renewal requirements, including advanced certifications, webinars, and CCE-eligible learning opportunities.

In the meantime, hereunder a list of three non-negotiables and six common pitfalls to avoid.
Three non-negotiables for your coaching certification program
- ICF Accreditation
The gold standard in coaching. Ensure the program is officially accredited at ICF Level 1 (ACC) or Level 2 (PCC) to qualify for fast-track certification in 2-4 weeks (instead of 16+ weeks at higher fees and risks). ICF credentials are not only recognized globally but also often required by organizations as part of HR’s pre-qualification and compliance criteria for selecting coaches. - Ready-to-Use Coaching Resources
You shouldn’t have to create everything from scratch. A strong program provides session guides, client tools, assessments, and tech platforms so you can start coaching right away. - Business & Career Growth Support
Coaching skills are essential—but so is building a business. Ensure your coach training includes branding, marketing, and sales to attract and retain clients and grow your practice.
Six common pitfalls to avoid
- Assuming all programs are ICF-accredited
Not all certifications qualify you for ICF credentials. Make sure the program is officially accredited at Level 1 or 2. - Overlooking mentor coaching support
Some programs don’t help you record sessions or charge extra if your recordings aren’t approved. Look for programs that offer unlimited support and clients to practice with. - Choosing a non-Level 1 or 2 program
Level 1 and 2 programs offer a fast-track to ICF accreditation (2-4 weeks) —others take longer (16+ weeks), cost more, and have lower passing rates. - Focusing only on theory
Without real-world coaching practice, like live coaching labs and feedback, you may struggle when coaching actual clients. - Believing certification alone gets clients
Certification is not enough. Choose a program that also teaches business development, marketing, sales, and client acquisition. - Not asking the right questions before enrolling
Dig deeper. Ask about ICF alignment, hands-on support, tools, and post-certification opportunities before you commit.
